The Canary Islands, separated only a few kilometers from the occidental Sahara coast, have in some of their areas, a clime and vegetastion very adecuate for the camel life. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and the southerm parts of Gran Canaria and Tenerife are zones of desertic climate, where only this animal and the donkey have been able to be used without having adaption problems. Due to these reasons of proximity and utility, little after the conquest of islands by the Spaniards, the first dromedaries began to arrive at the Oriental Islands, extending later to a large part of the islands. Its main use has been the ploughing of land and the transport of cargo and people, until the recent introduction of machinery has displaced this animal. Only in the last years, and thanks to the tourism, the camel has found a new form of life, appearing once again in the islands countryside.
